Gary R.'s Story

Life I was born on 1 December, 1941, in Berkeley, California. I've lived in the following places, mostly in northern California. A few places in western Oregon. (The (1) denotes how many different places in each city or town.) Oakland, CA (6), Paradise, CA (2), Lovelock, CA (2), Sterling City, CA (2), Coutolenc, CA (1), Hayfork, CA (1), Point Richmond, CA (1), Twin Rocks, OR (1), Rockaway, OR (1), Manhattan Beach, OR (1), Richmond, CA (2), El Cerrito, CA (2), Chico, CA (1), Palermo, CA (1), Nice, CA (1), Cobb (2), Middletown, CA (2), San Francisco, CA (4), Bay Point, CA (1), Frederick, MD (2), Kirksville, MO (1), Whispering Pines, CA (1) Tempe, AZ (2), Running Springs, CA (1), and now in Martinsburg, WV. In the military it's been (in order) Fort Ord, CA, Fort Sill, OK, Bamberg, Germany, Giessen, Germany, Fort Lewis, WA, Schweinfurt, Germany, Giessen, Germany, Fort Myer, VA, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., Chu Lai, Vietnam, Fort Bragg, NC, Vung Tau, Vietnam, Long Binh, Vietnam, Fort Knox, KY, Vogelweh, Germany, Kaiserslautern, Germany, Fort Baker, CA, Camp Casey, Tonduchon, So. Korea, Presidio of San Francisco. I don't know if my father is dead or alive. My mother married David L. Lay. My half-brother David John Lay was born August 14, 1953 in Richmond, CA. My mother died when I was 12 when I lived in El Cerrito, CA. She was only 28. I was in the 7th grade at Portola Junior High. When I finished the 7th grade I was promoted to the 9th grade. When my mother died I went to live with my step Palermo, CA, then my aunt in Oakland, and went to Claremont Junior High. I was having trouble with some of the guys in that school, and ran away from home. I ended up in a foster home in Nice, Lake County, CA, and went to Upper Lake High part of my Freshman year. This was a group home where there were about four other guys. Our foster parents were not very nice to us. The wouldn't let us go to any school functions, or play any sports. I got out of there and went to Glenbrook, CA, which was 2 1/2 miles from Cobb, CA in Lake County, and went to Kelseyville High. I stayed there until April 1958, and went to Middletown in Lake County, and graduated from Middletown High school on June 12, 1959, with 14 other Seniors. After graduation I worked in the California Division of Forestry at Kelsey-Cobb Station until October. I joined the Army on October 12, 1959. Got out after 3 years, re-enlisted 18 months later and retired from the Army in 1981. I lived in San Francisco for 15 years. Was married from 1972 to 1974...Expand for more
. Married again in 1979 to 1989. Had a son by my 2nd wife. He died of S.I.D.S. at 2 month,10 days old. This was the worse day of my life. I have 1 daughter born in Vietnam and living in Maryland. I have 2 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. I have 1 daughters born and living in Germany that I haven't seen since right after she was born in 1965. I'm still searching. I lived with my daughter and grandchildren in Frederick, MD for 19 months. I moved to Kirksville, Missouri on March 13, 2004. Moved to Whispering Pines, CA in late June 2004. The tornadoes ran me out of Missouri. I lived in Whispering Pines, CA for 22 months and it just got too inconvenient for me there. I needed a VA Hospital closer than 100 miles away. I started checking around for a place that was less expensive then California, and chose Tempe, Arizona. Sure it's hot, but I can handle that. I moved here the 10th of April 2006. So far it's not too bad. Well, Tempe lasted 22 months too. I said I could handle the heat, but not when it gets to 123 degrees. My brother lives in the Lake Arrowhead area of southern California, and had been trying to get me to move there for some time, so I moved to Running Springs, CA on 29 Feb 2008. Now I live just down the road from the fire station. So here I am at 6080 feet above sea level. It's taken me a while to get used to the altitude, but I've always loved it in the mountains. Running Springs was a nice place to live, but the fires worried me a lot. There weren't any while I was there, but the place has a history of bad fires. My winters were not nice at all. I lived in a duplex where the roof was at street level, so I sort of lived in a hole, and it snowed so much I think it was trying to fill in the hole, and I had a lot to dig out just to get to the road above. My front door was on the opposite side away from the road, so I had to dig a long ways. In August 2009 my brother was diagnosed with inoperable cancer and was given 8 months to live. He passed away October 10, 2009, and I moved to Martinsburg, West Virginia. I moved here because it's close to a VA Hospital, and only 40 miles from my daughter and grandchildren. And here I will stay I guess. I'll be 70 in December, and even though moving is tiresome and expensive, so who knows. I wouldn't rule out moving again. LOL! As of October 14, 2012 I have one more beautiful granddaughter. Her name is Emily Nhu Le One other thing. If I could live anywhere I could, I'd live in Hawaii. I don't care where as long as it was in Hawaii. Aloha!

Wow! I went outside, and it almost felt like I was back in Arizona.
This was on Facebook today. This place is only about 4 blocks from me. But what’s more astonishing is it’s across the street from the Sheriff Department.
Never mind the time on here because when I set this temperature gage up the other day, I didn’t need the time. It is 8:08 am. It shows 100.2 degrees outside. It’s not 100.2 degrees. This is an indoor/outdoor gage, and the
